MARKET NEWS – WHAT’S CAUSING OUR LACK OF BEES?π
Bee decline is now a global problem with up to 90 per cent of our crops at risk. There is a worldwide bee shortage due to a phenomenon known as colony collapse disorder, which causes bees to abandon their hives and die.
The exact cause of CCD is not entirely known, but a Harvard study points the finger at the use of the class of pesticides known as neonicotinoids, which are widely used across Australia on fruit, vegetables, nuts and canola. Β Concerns over the chemicals has seen them banned in Europe and highly regulated in Canada. Β Other factors believed to be behind the decline in bee numbers are climate change, loss of habitat through land clearing, pests, diseases, bacteria, bushfires, floods and electromagnetic fields.
